Artist description
The Zagreb Philharmonic is a number 1 orchestra in Croatia and one the most famous orchestras in this part of Europe. It has been a promoter of the art of music across Croatia as well as the country’s cultural ambassador in the world.
Its history has been shaped by first-class principal conductors such as Friedrich Zaun, Milan Horvat, Lovro von Matačić, Mladen Bašić, Pavle Dešpalj, Kazushi Ono, Pavel Kogan, Aleksander Rahbari and Vjekoslav Šutej. Many distinguished conductors and composers including Bruno Walter, Leopold Stokowski, Paul Kletzki, Sir Malcom Sargent, Kiril Kondrashin, Kurt Sanderling, Carlo Zecchi, Jean Martinon, Milan Sachs, Krešimir Baranović, Boris Papandopulo, Stjepan Šulek, Milko Kelemen, Igor Stravinski, Krzysztof Penderecki, and others.
The Zagreb Philharmonic approached the new millennium with a commitment to attracting an even broader and more diverse audience, in particular young people. In order to achieve the set objective, the Orchestra has extended its portfolio to include some interesting crossover and multi-media programmes. Maestro Leopold Hager takes over as the principal guest conductor, and Davorin Kempf, the reputed Croatian composer, will for two years serve as the Philharmonic’s first ever composer in residence.
